Watch Theia launch on stage here.
This interview with Theia founders Bill Fishkin, Stephen Phillips, Mark Pullyblank, and Matthew Shouse (left to right) was conducted by the Job Portraits team during the LAUNCH Festival.
Start with your elevator pitch. What are you making?
Mark: Theia builds beautiful, highly immersive 3D homes that ain't been built yet.
How did you come up with this problem, and why are you the guys to solve it?
Mark: Bill came to me with this idea because he likes to play Minecraft.
Bill: I was playing Minecraft with my 8 year old son Gavin, and he's walking me through this Frank Lloyd Wrightesque home that he built for us, virtually, to live in. He was showing me all the features and benefits. I've got an agency background and I’ve worked with some enormous real estate clients, so I'm sitting there watching my son pitch, and I'm thinking, the kid is hustling me! That was the spark. This would be really cool for pre-built real estate.
Tell me about being here at LAUNCH Festival. What’s it like?
Mark: It's been great. Our product is a bit different than the typical app.
We've found, like, a lot of people saying their app is “a little bit of this app, mixed with a little bit of that app,” and everyone nods. But we straight up build beautiful homes. With an Oculus Rift you can totally immerse yourself. You walk around, and it’s almost an amusement park ride. So we’ve been really popular here... and it's always fun to be popular.
What are you hoping happens when you get up on stage?
Mark: I'm hoping I don’t wet myself. That’s a big stage there.
Do you want me to put that in the story?
So what's next for you guys?
Bill: Prioritizing all the contacts we've made. We have such a huge pile of business cards. It’s insane.
Mark: Plus we've run out of money so we're going to burn the cards to keep warm.
Bill: You're not supposed to tell them that!
