Watch Ōura launch on stage here.
This interview with Ōura founders Petteri Lahtela and Kari Kivela was conducted by the team at Job Portraits during preparations for the LAUNCH Festival.
Let’s start with your elevator pitch.
Ōura is a sensor-filled ring and app that help you understand how your body responds to your sleep, rest, and active life.
The app gives you actionable guidance that can help you perform at your best and live a balanced life. We all live unique lives, and our bodies are unique, so Ōura provides very personalized information to help you reach your potential.
Can you give me an example of what kind of information?
Sure, adjusting your sleep times. Ōura continuously measures your sleep quality, and based on your body’s autonomic responses, it can tell whether you've had enough deep sleep and REM sleep, which provide physical and mental recovery.
The app provides guidance in clear human language. If you want to be in top performance tomorrow, it might suggest you go to sleep at 10:30 this evening. It could also suggest some resting periods, relaxing exercises, and short walks to help you recover from your previous day’s mental and physical load.
By guiding you to optimize your performance, you'll increase your capacity over time. Ōura helps you adjust your activity level and timing based on how ready your body is.
Why did you decide to tackle this problem?
When we started the company, we weren’t even thinking about technology. We simply wanted to help people live at their full potential. Previously, we were traveling a lot, working hard, and also wanted to be present with our kids and families. So we wanted to find a solution to a problem we had ourselves.
Then we weren’t planning to develop our own hardware; we tried to utilize what exists in the market and develop software on top of that. But we found there’s no simple, comfortable way to get accurate access to the to the data we need. It was also important to us to create something that looked so fabulous, people would wear it even without any technology inside.
What are you hoping will happen in the months after LAUNCH?
For us, it’s an important media launch, and Ōura will be available for pre-orders in the next couple of months. We are now making the final fine tuning to the algorithms and refining the user experience before actual sales launch in September 2015.
