Watch Huckle launch on stage here.
This interview with Huckle founders Jordan Stone and Gregory Hill was conducted by the Job Portraits team during preparations for the LAUNCH Festival.
Let's start with your elevator pitch.
Jordan: Huckle is a location-based messaging app. When your friends are hanging out together, it automatically groups them and creates a public chat room. Also, every place on Earth now has its own public group chat room.
Why this problem, and why are you the right people to solve it?
Jordan: It all started with my cousin, who’s in college and was telling me about her fear of missing out—FOMO. She described how she still texts and calls with her friends because nobody can agree on an app—because there’s no big reason to agree. So we thought, phones have Bluetooth and GPS…surely we can use these sensors to create a better messaging app.
What’s your background with building apps?
Jordan: This is our second version of Huckle. The first was a prototype we took to college campuses, where we got amazing feedback. This version is our first big run.
Gregory: We actually took away a lot of features, so it’s much simpler than the first version. The other thing is that both Jordan and I have experience working with millennials in education. Jordan was head of technology for Taylor Swift. He grew her Facebook page from 1 million to 50 million followers in just a couple years. My background is in education product management and we've both been building websites since middle school. We’ve been close friends for 15 years.
Is there something in particular you're hoping to learn or achieve from launching at the festival?
Jordan: We have a good idea that Huckle will be useful to college students, but we’re curious about its application to conferences.
Gregory: Conferences have this reputation for being stodgy. But all of the conferences we've been to, you hang out during the day as a professional, and then you go out and get drinks with all the cool people that you've met as yourself. Huckle bridges that gap. We want to bring people together by building a really fast, engaging, delightful, and exciting chat experience.
