This interview with Highly founders Andrew Courter (left) and Eric Wuebben was conducted by the team at Job Portraits during preparations for the LAUNCH Festival.
Let’s start with your elevator pitch.
Andrew: Highly is a highlighter for the web.
Anytime you're reading online, you can highlight the stuff that matters to you and then send just those highlights to your friends. That way your friends gets 80 percent of the value of that whole article, in 10 or 20 percent of the time. At the end of the day, there’s so much good stuff to read, you’re not reading nine out of ten amazing things. You just have to guess which ten percent to read. And all the while, you’re dodging clickbait.
Why this product and why are you the right people to build it?
Andrew: We came to this from different places, but we both had a pain point in our lives. I was working as a design lead at another startup and I would send links to my team, but no one would read them. And I couldn't get mad, because everybody was super busy. So I cobbled together other services, and created a kind of public page where I just had highlights from articles, which I could put in a Facebook group. Then people started to read them more, and we could have discussions about them.
Eric: And I was a product manager at a startup with about 200 people. We’d all consume a ton of content and, as the project manager, it was my job to turn that around and get our 125 sales people prepared for their meetings. But the great sales people were already reading the same content I'd read. It was a big pain point to realize, since we weren't reading together, we weren't saving each other any time. In fact, a majority of us were spending half of our work time reading.
In an ideal world, what does the month after you launch onstage look like?
Andrew: So, first, we have to shower because we’re covered in champagne. No, but really, LAUNCH is a really cool opportunity to raise the profile of Highly. It’s in private beta now and we’re going to open up to another cohort at LAUNCH. We’re stoked to learn more about how people will use the product. We’re working hard to make sure we’re ready for a public launch. Our promise for Highly is that, anytime you’re reading, you should be able to highlight.
