Watch HandUp launch on stage here.
This interview with HandUp cofounder Rose Broome was conducted by the Job Portraits team during preparations for the LAUNCH Festival.
What is HandUp and what are you unveiling at LAUNCH Festival?
HandUp lets you donate directly to specific homeless people and others in need in your neighborhood. This year at LAUNCH we're excited to release HandUp Campaigns - now anyone can create their own fundraiser for a specific homeless person or cause on HandUp. All donations through HandUp are securely redeemed through our trusted nonprofit partners.
What are you most proud to have achieved with HandUp so far?
Since LAUNCH Festival last year we've partnered with 14 nonprofits across the country. Over 500 HandUp members have successfully reached 1,500+ goals on the site, like security deposits, employment expenses, and medical care. We're also excited to announce a recent $500k grant from Google.org which will help us further expand in the Bay Area.
What do you hope to gain from pitching at LAUNCH?
Here in San Francisco homelessness is such a visible problem and so many people are confused about what do about it. HandUp solves that by giving a direct and transparent way to take action. My hope for LAUNCH Festival is to have people sign up for a campaign at handup.org/campaigns and for us to build relationships with future investors and corporate partners.
