Watch Glimpse launch on stage here.
This interview with Glimpse cofounder Elan Miller was conducted by the team at Job Portraits during preparations for the LAUNCH Festival.
Let's start with your elevator pitch.
We’re building Glimpse, a dating app built on Instagram. We help people showcase not only what they look like, but also how they see the world.
What compelled you about this problem, and why are you the right person to be solving it?
I've been thinking about storytelling for a while — I used to help brands and different companies tell their story. A year or so ago I was using OkCupid, and everybody's profile sounded exactly the same… and all anybody was doing was looking at photos anyway. And I realized, meeting new people isn't the problem. The real point is to have a great conversation as quickly as possible — it’s about sparing people from awkward first encounters.
I started A/B testing different things on my OKCupid profile, using my Instagram handle and putting some of my photos in my profile picture, and it seemed to resonate. We made this splash page, “Does your Instagram say more about you than your dating profile?” and that got a lot of attention. That was the impetus for Glimpse.
What are you hoping to learn once you launch on stage, and through the rest of March?
This is our 2.0, so it isn't completely new, but we're excited to share something a bit different. Our big new feature is you have to reply to new messages by 10pm, otherwise they're gone. It's kind of a ballsy feature, and we want to see how users respond. Can we put the right constraints around people to foster great conversations? Our internal testing has been doing really well, and now is the fun part, like releasing a balloon and seeing how far it goes.
