Watch Bento launch on stage here.
This interview with Bento founders Jason Demant (left), Mattin Noblia, and Vincent Cardillo (right) was conducted by the team at Job Portraits during preparations for the LAUNCH Festival.
Tell us what you’re doing at Bento.
Jason: We deliver delicious Asian food in minutes. Caviar and GrubHub are slow. Sprig and SpoonRocket deliver quickly, but your choice of dishes is limited. With Bento you get the best of both: You choose the food you want, and delivery takes just minutes.
Why this problem and why are you the right people to solve it?
Jason: For me the magic moment happened when I ordered SpoonRocket. Being able to hit a button and literally receive my food in three minutes, which happened that first time, I was like, “My gosh, this is the future.” Then I saw there were a lot of ways to improve on the whole thing. Why are we the right team? Tremendous passion for this space. On our team is a chef, an engineer, and a business person. Food is how we bond.
Vincent: I can add to that. Everybody has to eat, right? Well, we might as well do it right then. When I met Jason we clicked immediately: Bento was food and tech—the two things I love, but finally together. And speaking as an engineer, the meal customization aspect has presented a layer of complexity and challenge that has proven a whole bunch of fun to work on.
What is the biggest thing you’re hoping to learn as you come out of stealth mode?
Vincent: There’s no one huge thing, to be honest. We need to solve a bunch of small problems to create an oiled system that runs really well. It’s everything from logistics to building a team to raising money, which are all smallish problems in the grand scheme of things, but which add up to a great product and company.
